Overview

General John Burgoyne was an experienced British Army general who led an ill-fated 1777 invasion of the Hudson Valley in an attempt to cut off New England from the rest of the colonies.

    • Rebel forces, under the command of Maj. Gen. Horatio Gates surrounded and defeated Burgoyne’s force of British soldiers, Hessian troops, and Native Americans. It was the British Army’s largest defeat until Washington’s victoryt at Yorktown.

    In addition to his military career, Burgoyne dabbled at writing plays and poetry.

    His work became notable enough to be published and performed.
